Ethoxyquin, a synthetic chemical, is used in many brands of cat food as a preservative - it is approved and regulated in the US by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) for use as a preservative in animal feeds.
The safety of ethoxyquin is, at best, highly questionable, and some pet food manufacturers - under pressure or some of their own accord - have voluntarily ceased adding this preservative to foods.
