It's usually best to make the transition to a new diet slowly, adding small amounts of the new food to food that your cat is accustomed to and then gradually shifting the ratio. This is particularly true with older cats or cats with extremely sensitive digestive systems.
Cats with compromised GI tracts may need to be switched over even more slowly - over a period of weeks or even months. These cats may also benefit from the addition of biologically-available probiotics or digestive enzymes during the transition period.
